The Expert

In the professional world, sometimes technical expertise can be drowned out by the pressure of managers, buzzwords,  unrealistic expectations, and the complete ignorance of topics. It can escalate at times to where stakeholders have unattainable expectations, but still expect an unknown desired result.

In the video below, a group meets with a subject matter expert to discuss the task at hand. The task? Draw 7 red lines that are perpendicular and drawn in different colors of ink. The tasks are presented by the expert to be unattainable.  However, the meeting members, regardless of their roles and levels of understanding, are adamant that their ideas hold value and can be accomplished.  None of the stakeholders have any concept of shapes, geometry, or color.

Filled with visual frustration, the expert finally (and sarcastically) agrees to the groups demands, because after all, he is an expert.

Take a break and enjoy this comical video that teaches a great lesson on expectations.

  1. This is a fantastic video, and I can relate to. The comedy of throwing around expert buzzwords is something I see in my career all the time, yet no one is getting down to solving the problem. I also see a parallel to being in meetings where everyone has an opinion on what is being asked, but the person doing the work. Sometimes things just don't work. I also work in the construction industry, so things on paper might always translate to real world implementation. Great video and parody.
